World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies

Barcelona, July 19th – 24th 2010

Objectives

The overall objective of the Congress is to offer the possibility to share and exchange research, experiences and ideas between more than 2000 interdisciplinary experts from all branches of the humanities, social sciences and related disciplines, from more than 50 countries. In this respect, WOCMES Barcelona 2010 particularly wishes to foster the participation of experts from the regions studied in the congress and to facilitate their integration within new or existing networks of work and exchange.

The Congress also aims to shed light on key issues related to the Mediterranean and the Middle East and to open debate on new topics and disciplines. Euro-Mediterranean issues will receive particular attention taking into account Barcelona’s interest in the Euromed Process, the Euromed agenda of 2010 as well as the forthcoming Spanish presidency of the European Union.

Middle Eastern culture will also be placed under the spotlight, thanks to a variety of exhibitions related to different aspects of Middle Eastern studies; a film festival with panel discussions and a book fair attended by booksellers, publishers and authors; as well as a selection of artistic events.

A large number of associations, research centers, universities, international organizations and other institutions from all over the world have already started to submit proposals of panels, roundtables, papers and posters, through the online submission forms available on this website.

Local and international media and high-ranking decision-makers in political, economic and cultural spheres are also expected to attend the Congress and disseminate and promote the exchange of ideas far beyond academic research.

The conference’s working languages are English and French.
