The mountain is located at around 50 kilometres west of Barcelona and the journey is almost one hour. This mountain mass of serrated sandstone is one of the most widely visible landmarks of the region and it is considered as the spiritual centre of the Catalan people. It is mainly due to the importance of a small image of ‘La Mare de Deu’ (Mother of God) said to have been made by St Luke and brought to this area by St. Peter. Blackened by centuries of votive candles the statue is known affectionately as La Moreneta. Around the legend, an impressive Benedictine Monastery was first built in AD 976 and now it is the home of 300 monks and it is open for any visitors. Paintings and sculpture decorate the Basilica and the museum. There are also restaurants and shops for tourists. The panoramic views of this area are truly spectacular.
Moreover, it also worth seeing the ‘Escolania’, the oldest children’s choir in Europe that daily performs at about 1.00 pm.
